Cue Tips - grip, feel and control

A good shot starts with the right cue tip.

The cue tip may be a small part of a billiard cue, but it has a major influence on how the cue performs. The leather tip at the end of the cue is responsible for the contact with the ball and determines how much grip, control and feedback you experience with every shot. That is why choosing the right cue tip is just as important as choosing the cue itself.

During play, the cue tip prevents the cue from slipping off the ball. Combined with chalk, it creates enough friction to strike the ball in a controlled way, both in the center and off-center. This allows you to control not only direction and speed, but also to apply spin deliberately.

Hardness and playing feel

Cue tips are available in different hardness levels, each with its own playing characteristics:

Soft cue tips provide more grip on the ball and make it easier to apply spin. They tend to feel more forgiving and are often chosen by players who focus on precision and control.

Hard cue tips offer a more direct contact with the ball and result in less deflection during powerful shots. They are popular with players who rely on speed and power, such as in three-cushion billiards.

Medium cue tips sit between soft and hard and offer a balanced combination of feel and stability.

The best hardness for you depends on your playing style, discipline and personal preference.

Material and construction

Most cue tips are made of leather. In addition to traditional single-layer tips, there are also layered cue tips. These are constructed from multiple thin layers of leather pressed together under high pressure. This improves shape retention and durability, which is especially appreciated by advanced and frequent players.

Cue tip types and attachment

Cue tips are available in different types, depending on how they are attached to the cue. The most common option is the glue-on cue tip, which is attached directly to the ferrule and offers a consistent playing feel.

There are also screw on tips and push on tips, designed for easy replacement.

Maintenance and replacement

A cue tip is a wear part and will eventually need to be replaced. Regular chalking is essential to maintain sufficient grip and to prevent miscues. It is also important to keep the tip properly shaped, so it remains nicely rounded.

Good maintenance not only extends the lifespan of the cue tip, but also ensures a more consistent playing feel. For tools and accessories to keep your cue tip in optimal condition, take a look at our cue tip maintenance products.

Buying a cue tip online

Many players look for improvement in a new cue, while changing the cue tip often already makes a noticeable difference in grip, control and feel. A well-chosen billiard cue tip provides more confidence with every shot.
